The place of origin of the polyphagous shot hole borer is South East Asia. This beetle and its fungus were introduced in US and in Israel during the past 15 years and have caused serious damage, especially on avocado trees. It is a threat to a reported of 18 different plant species and therefore billions of trees worldwide. This includes tea, citrus, guava, lychee, mango, persimmon, pomegranate, macadamia and silk oak.

Regions in Johannesburg

The Dynamic Risk Profile works on the assumption that there are 10 million trees in the Johannesburg Urban Forest. Current projections are that 500 000 will be infected by the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer over the next five years. The profile also indicates numbers which are identified, verified and recorded.

There is a continues process of identifying, verifying and recording infected trees on the Dynamic Risk Profile. To date, infected trees have been recorded in five (5) wards from a total of 135 wards in the Johannesburg forest area.
With the WhatsApp reporting system launched, it is anticipated that the general public and associations will report all the trees observed in their respective areas. It is also expected that the number will increase significantly. The stakeholder reporting effort will also aid to get a clear picture of the real scope and magnitude of the infestation.
